The Children of Iraq

These are deeply sad and disturbing pictures: The Children of Iraq. What are we doing?

Update: This page has gone offline, so you can't see it. I'll keep watch and correct this post if it returns.

malaria kills children

There's a good article in today's Chicago Tribune on the global human cost of malaria. In the paper edition see the Metro North section, page 1. On the web, see "Tsunami opens eyes to another human crisis" by Eric Zorn (registration required). See also The Malaria Project web site.

26.5% of the children in Niger Republic die before age 5, 1 child out of every 4 children. Malaria is a major cause. (See page 33 of the UNDP Human Development Index .PDF file, labeled page 171.)

An open heart, a thoughtful mind, a will to take action: these three together can make a difference that matters. Josh Gottlieb's story is inspiring.

Owen's Dad came through with some photos.

When I got home from work today and checked my email, I found these photos from Jon. Double-click on any of them for a bigger view. I don't seem to get tired of looking at them.

details, details

On the name Owen- Abi: "We just liked it."

His length: 24"

More on hair color: "It's light. Mom thinks she sees some red."

On beginning to learn life skills- Abi: "He doesn't seem to be very interested in eating at the moment." Later: "He just had a good feed."

On the frenzied demand for photographs- Jon: "I'll get some together to send you tonight."

On when they get to go home- Maybe tomorrow; they want to make sure he's eating okay first.

He's finally here!! Hurray!! Hurray!!

Today, Owen John Sutcliffe was born at 11:30 PM (5:30 PM Chicago time) in Bedford, England.

The young lad weighed in at 8 pounds, 13 ounces. He's a chunk! Carol says his hair looks "reddish," and "He has the cutest face!"

His head was rather big, so some extra help was needed to get him out, but he made it!

Mother and son are doing fine, and should get to come home tomorrow.

Jon says, "Abi was a warrior, a machine". Carol says she was amazingly strong.

Carol is going to stay a couple of extra days to help, and to enjoy this splendid new person. She will be home Friday evening.

almost here

Andy says he just spoke with Jon, and Abi is almost to the pushing stage.

labor update 2

I just spoke with Andy, who carried a message to Carol from me that she if she wants I can book a ticket change for her to return to Chicago on Monday instead of tomorrow.

Jon's not answering his cell, probably because they want it turned off in the hospital, or perhaps just so he can stay focused on his beloved. Andy, bless his heart, went down to the hospital and called the maternity suite on the internal phone to deliver the message.

She didn't exactly answer, except to say that she doesn't feel an urgent need to reschedule.

Abi is doing fine, and labor is progressing. Carol expects a baby within 12 hours.

I'm actually having some trouble getting any work done today, for some reason. Becoming a grandfather seems to be more emotionally difficult than I expected. I keep flashing back to the six births I was present at with Carol. My throat keeps tightening up.

labor update

Carol called this morning at 6:00 (Noon, Bedford time). At some point during the night, labor stopped, so this morning they went to the clinic, where they broke Abi's bag of waters.

That did get labor going again, so Abi is in the hospital now, fully engaged in the magnificent work of birthing a new human being into the world.

No news on when delivery is expected, but we guess sometime today.

Carol is scheduled to fly out of London Heathrow tomorrow afternoon at 3:25 PM GMT , arriving here in Chicago at 6:15 PM CST.

labor has begun

Carol just called (5:12 PM CST) from Jon & Abi's to say that Abi's labor has begun. It's still early, and Carol thinks that delivery is still quite a few hours away. Tomorrow morning some time we should be grandparents!

They're all at Jon & Abi's home now, just taking it easy, but at some point when things are farther along, they'll go into the hospital for the delivery. Because a lot of flu is going around, the hospital is restricting visitors, but we're praying that Carol will still get to be with Abi during the delivery as planned.

I have this strong tight feeling, a strange, high-pressure happiness, in my throat and eyes, and I seem to be leaking a little. :-)

still no grandbaby

Due on Dec. 26, the child seems reluctant to face the cold. We simulate patience, but can't stop thinking about this new person about to change our lives.

beginnings

So, after doing lots of blog reading, now I'm going to try the other side. http://inotice.blogspot.com, I think, is the doorway. Let's go!
